LIFE IS ACCEPTING

“Differences were meant by God not to divide but to enrich.”

LE FILS DE L’AUTRE centres on Joseph Silberg who is about to turn 18 years old and serve in the Israeli Defense Forces. During routine tests, his family discovers his blood type is different from theirs and eventually that that Joseph is not their son. Due to a bombing attack that occurred on the night he was born, Joseph and another baby were taken to shelters for safety and switched by mistake. The other baby, Yacine Al Bezaaz, belongs to a Palestinian family.

The story develops reflecting the issues of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict through the reaction of the two fathers, the two mothers and the boys themselves along a path which will eventually lead from xenophobia to acceptance...

LIFE IS ACTING

“A boy who won’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up to anything.”

When Amir lived in Afghanistan with his wealthy family and their two servants, Ali and his son Hassan, life was good. One winter there was an important kite tournament and Amir won. As Hassan was about to fetch the kite that lost for Amir, Assef, a bully, and a few other boys demanded the kite. Hassan refused and for this he was raped. Amir witnessed everything but did nothing. In time his sense of guilt and his shame led him to get Hassan into trouble. Thus Hassan and his father decided to leave.

When Afghanistan was taken over by the Taliban, Amir and his family fled to Fremont California, where they started their new lives. In time, Amir met a girl, Soraya, and married her but one day he received a phone-call from Kabul and he realized that he had the chance to finally redeem himself...

LIFE IS APPRECIATING

“Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside while still alive. Never surrender.”

TUPAC SHAKUR, an American rapper, record producer & actor as well as a poet & an activist, spoke of gratitude as well as violence, about having ambitions and reaching them despite the circumstances and conflicts we are faced with.

Did you hear about the rose that grew
from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature's law is wrong it
learned to walk without having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams,
it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared.

LIFE IS FORGIVING

“The love of a single heart can make a world of difference.”

IMMACULÉE ILIBAGIZA grew up in Rwanda: in 1994 the world she loved was ripped apart as the country descended into a bloody genocide. In only 100 days nearly a million Rwandans were brutally murdered including Immaculée’s family. Incredibly, she survived the slaughter. For 91 days, she and seven other women huddled silently together in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor while hundreds of machete-wielding killers hunted for them.

It was during those endless hours of unspeakable terror that Immaculée discovered the power of prayer, eventually shedding her fear of death and forging a profound and lasting relationship with God. She emerged from her bathroom hideout having discovered the meaning of truly unconditional love—a love so strong she was able to seek out and forgive her family’s killers...

LIFE IS HELPING

“Choose to share your time, voice or money to make a massive change in the world.”

Started by Milana Vayntrub and Eron Zehavi, #CantDoNothing is an organization based in Los Angeles, California, which helps everyday individuals have a real impact and assist refugees globally by having its supporters use their time in volunteering, their voice in posting on social media, or their money in donating to select organizations working directly with refugees.

Milana started it during a holiday in Greece last year when she realized that it was “just ridiculous” to vacation knowing what was going on in Lesvos. She changed her flight and travelled to where she could do some good, like Lesvos where the beaches were lined in orange life vests of desperate families seeking, not freedom or opportunity, but protection... life.

LIFE IS RESPECTING

“Rispettare e prendersi cura di coloro che ora sono anziani e bisognosi è uno degli onori più elevati. Amiamoli, rispettiamoli e prendiamocene cura.”

Watching the movie THE KARATE KID most of us can identify with Daniel in some way or another. That is the wonder of good characters – we project ourselves onto them. Of course, not many of us get this kind of opportunity to make such a public change and thoroughly defeat the “bad” in our lives, but the escapism of movies allows us to imagine it at least! Daniel is the everyman hero, and the scenarios he faces are metaphors for many of our own lives.

But the keypoint is Mr Myagi. We all need a Mr. Miyagi in our life. He is the teacher we all knew he would be, the rather odd elderly man who becomes a guide, not only for Daniel, thanks to his experience and his wisdom. The Karate Kid is about respect, redemption and growth. For everyone.
