THE ART OF LAUGHING

Laughter is more than “the sun that drives winter from the human face” (V. Hugo): it can change lives and save lives.

Comic Relief is a major charity founded in 1985 and based in the UK with a vision of a just world, free from poverty.

Their mission is to drive positive change through the power of entertainment: they have raised millions of pounds, mainly through their two big fundraising campaigns, Red Nose Day and Sport Relief, and spent the money raised to tackle the roots of poverty and social injustice in the UK and across the world.

THE ART OF DANCING

“Dance is the hidden language of the soul.”

Attraction are a Hungarian shadow theatre group from Budapest who transform events and sentiments into touching dance sequences, inspiring nations across the world and breaking language barriers.

A dance in which shadows of the dancers are cast on a screen can become effective only if all the components act and move literally as one body: each performer is essential to the perfection of the image cast but can only create the image with all the other members. Thus Attraction’s performances speak to man’s soul not only through the affecting themes they choose but also through their moving and feeling as one.

THE ART OF LIVING

“If God can use a man without arms and legs… to be His hands and feet then He will certainly use my willing heart.”

Nick Vujicic - An Australian Christian evangelist & motivational speaker, Nick was born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterised by the absence of all four limbs.

From his early years of depression and loneliness, constantly wondering why he was different from all the other kids, questioning the purpose of life, or if he even had a purpose, he has come a long way… He’s now an author, musician, actor, whose hobbies include fishing, painting and swimming: he travels around the world, sharing his story with millions, bringing hope and finding meaning into their life.

THE ART OF CARING

“Death is not the enemy: indifference is! You treat a disease: you win, you lose. You treat a person you’ll win, no matter what the outcome.”

Patch Adams - An American physician, comedian, social activist, clown, and writer, in 1971 he founded the Gesundheit! Institute, the culture of which is the same one he has decided for himself: happy, funny, loving, cooperative, creative and thoughtful. His health care model integrates the traditional medicine with alternative ones such as naturopathy, acupuncture, and homeopathy.

His humanitarian clowning is based on the idea that laughter is an integral element of effective doctoral care so each year he organizes groups of volunteers from around the world to travel to war zones, refugee camps and natural disaster sites using clowning as a means to get love and compassion close to orphans, patients, and other people in need.

THE ART OF SHARING

“Nothing is yours. It is to use. It is to share. If you will not share it, you cannot use it.”

Carlinhos Brown - A Brazilian musician, songwriter and record producer from Bahia, he was born and grew up living the social problems of the Candeal slum.

In the late 1980s he started to form percussion ensembles to unite the people in his hometown, at first simply gathering people in the streets and teaching them basic percussion patterns, but eventually creating a band called Timbalada which soon became very popular. Many of the proceeds of Timbalada went towards fixing up the streets of Candeal by repaving roads and renovating houses.

In 1994 he founded the Pracatum Music School to give poor children access to education and the possibility to change their own situations.

THE ART OF GIVING

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”

Ulises De La Cruz - A retired Ecuadorian footballer, in 2002 he set up a charity, Friends of FundeCruz, in his home village Piquiucho, in one of Ecuador’s poorest regions, focusing on children's nutrition, health, education and sports development, providing daily meals for primary school children, running water for a whole village, a hospital, a school and a community sports centre. For his work he has been named a UNICEF ambassador.

When he retired in 2013 he announced that he would devote his time to politics in Ecuador to fight against poverty with better means: since then he has been a member of his country’s National Assembly for the governing PAIS Alliance.
