Amanda Todd

She was a Canadian girl, victim of cyberbullism and bullism, who committed suicide. Before her death, she posted a video on YouTube using flashcards to describe her experience. In response to her death, a national discussion on criminalizing cyberbullying ensued as well as more funding and support for anti-bullying organizations (like the Amanda Todd Trust, established by Amanda´s mother to support anti-bullying awareness education and programs for young people with mental health problems).

Iqbal Masih

He was a Pakistani child labourer and activist, symbol of the fight against children´s exploitation in the textile industry. Thanks to him, about three thousand young slaves had the possibility to escape the hell they lived in:"Children should have pens in their hands, not tools" is what he proclaimed and under international pressure, the Pakistani government was obliged to close down several carpet factories. On 16th April 1995, on Easter Sunday, Iqbal Masih was assassinated but his message lives on.

Malala Yousafzai

She is a Pakistani school pupil and education activist who became known in early 2009, at the age of 11–12, when she wrote a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC detailing her life under Taliban rule, their attempts to take control of the valley, and her views on promoting education for girls. On 9 October 2012, Yousafzai was shot in the head and neck in an assassination attempt by Taliban gunmen while returning home on a school bus: she survived the attack and on 12 July 2013 she gave a speech at the United Nations demanding the right to study for every child in the world.

Nkosi Johnson

He was a South African child with HIV ⁄ AIDS, who made a powerful impact on public perceptions of the pandemic. At the time of his death, he was the longest–surviving HIV–positive born child. He became a no–official spokesman of the fight against AIDS. In 2000 Nkosi was the keynote speaker at the 13th International AIDS Conference, where he encouraged people with HIV⁄AIDS to be open about the disease and to seek equal treatment.

Mattie J.T. Stepanek

He was an American poet who suffered from a rare form of muscular dystrophy, dysautonomic mitochondrial myopathy, which resulted in his death a month before his 14th birthday. He became a peace advocate and a motivational speaker on behalf of people with disabilities and children with life–threatening conditions believing that life is a gift to be celebrated and that his life mission was to spread peace to the world.
